Essential Oils and Aromatherapy - Not Quite the Same Thing

Essential oils and aromatherapy are often used interchangeably, but they're not quite the same thing. Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts: bottled drops of nature, each with unique scents and therapeutic properties. Aromatherapy is the way we use those oils to emotionally and physically support ourselves: blending them into skincare, rolling them onto pulse points or diffusing them to create a calming, restorative space.

Think of essential oils as the ingredients and aromatherapy as the nurturing ritual.

Why Blends Matter

A blend is simply two or more essential oils working together in harmony. You don't need to identify each individual note, it's about how the combination makes you feel: comforted, uplifted, grounded, calm.

Essential oils are exceptionally concentrated and are always diluted in a carrier oil, measured carefully by the drop. Here's a safe guide for everyday use:

1% dilution - 1 drop essential oil per 5ml carrier oil. A gentle starting point for most adults.

2% dilution - 2 drops per 5ml carrier oil. Suitable for general body use.

0.5–1% dilution - for the face, sensitive skin, children or the elderly.

3% dilution - for short-term, specific therapeutic purposes only; not suitable for large body areas.

Essential Oil Safety: What You Need to Know

Used with care and respect, essential oils are a wonderfully supportive and natural way to enhance wellbeing. A few important guidelines to keep in mind:

Always patch test before use. If skin becomes warm or flushed, remove the oil with a damp cloth immediately. Some oils, including cinnamon, clove, oregano and thyme, require much lower dilutions due to their potency and can irritate skin if used above very low concentrations.

Grapefruit oil may interact with certain medications, including statins and some blood pressure medicines. Eucalyptus can be too stimulating for those with epilepsy and should be used with caution.

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, on prescription medication or living with a chronic health condition, always seek advice from a qualified aromatherapist or healthcare professional before use.
